The NCP was founded in 1999 by Sharad Pawar, P. A. Sangma and Tariq Anwar after they were expelled from the Congress over Sonia Gandhi's foreign origin issue. The party has been part of governments in Maharashtra repeatedly and at the centre under UPA-I and UPA-II.
