Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam
The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam is the ruling party of Tamil Nadu. It is one of the principal voices of Dravidian politics, emphasising Tamil language, social justice and rationalism.
Ideology
History
Founded by C. N. Annadurai after splitting from Periyar's Dravidar Kazhagam, the DMK first came to power in Tamil Nadu in 1967 — the first non-Congress government in a major Indian state. M. Karunanidhi led the party for nearly five decades; his son M. K. Stalin has been Chief Minister since 2021.
Political positions
Opposition to Hindi imposition, support for two-language policy, expanded OBC and SC/ST reservations, strong state rights, and social welfare schemes such as free bus travel for women.
